Not a "goodbye", but "see you soon"!

The saddest story there was on the closing day and also my last day to stay there. I couldn't stop crying all the day because I felt so lost and empty, especially when thinking about my students, with their daily reprimand and their excellent service to me through out my month there. So, on the last day I taught, I took the opportunity to go to school solely to meet students and also my cooperating teacher.
When I arrived at school, I was from class to class to tell them that the day was my last day and there I couldn't hold back my tears, hugging them tightly. The same thing happened in the dorm the night before. After returning from school, I went straight to the closing event and there were many activities that we did together. We performed and tell more about our culture to each other, also show to one another our traditional dance.

Night before my flight (Dinner with my UIC family)

Good Food, Good Mood!

If anyone asks, "What do you like besides the people there?" Surely my answer will be about the foods there, and it's not really surprising that people there also really like to eat because the food is very tasty and never disappoints, even though the food is mediocre, but the tastes is so amazing. I believed that other people who already went to Philippines also feel the same thing with me.
My first dinner after I arrived Davao City, was with my UIC family. I was so surprised to see how much they love their foods. I saw that they have added a lot of rice, while I'm trying hard to finish a plate of rice. That is the most interesting while I was there because every time I eat with them, I won't stop to hear the phrase of "Come on, eat some more!" and that is why I am getting fatter after coming home from there. But, even they love to eat they still generally slim.
I have tried a lot of Philippines foods and it was hard for me to find the spicy one. I found that Filipinos are not really interested in eating spicy food. They like spicy but not too spicy. There are so many delicious foods there and I like it very much, but when people ask me which do you like more? I will say that “I like sisig, and halo-halo the most.”

Final Demonstration

Think about my final demonstration, I feel that I am the luckiest person because I got a lovely cooperating teacher who was always by my side to protect, lead, and help me in everything I do in my classes. She told me more about the students, taught me on how to make a good lesson plan, gave me good inputs, and rebuked me when something went wrong. She was also the one who really helped in preparing lesson plan, and my topic on my final demonstration. Also not forget also about my students, they participated well, behave well, and were really active in asking questions.

Daily Teaching (School Curriculum & Suggestions)

Here we go, to the most interesting and the cutest moment of mine in UIC.
First of all, I wanna share with you about the curriculum, pedagogical content, teaching plan, practice and system, and materials that the teachers use to teach in the classroom in the basic school of UIC, especially the lesson plan because when I was there, I was not using my lesson plan in Indonesia. They required me to use theirs lesson plan. In their lesson plan, the teacher are not going to tell the students directly about their topic, but they will encourage them to think critically and guess the topic by themselves. In order to guess the topic, they will be given an activity, video or picture to make them easier to guess. After the students guess and know the topic of their lesson, the teacher will explain clearly about the lesson.
Then, give the students some activities to practice and see how understand they are about the topic. The activities must be related to the topic discussed such as, creating songs, making posters and acting, and explaining their understanding about the lesson. These activities are very important in order to improve the students communication, collaboration, self-efficacy, and strategies to solve every problems in their study. So, in these activities, the students are able to make an innovation on their study such as, creating a new song, or making a new action on something they learned. The curriculum of this school also very strict on pushing all of the students in thinking critically and that was so tense and noticeable in my first week when I was observing every class.
In the teaching and learning process, the teacher has to keep on throwing the students some questions to ensure they understand well. That is the important part of the lesson plan, to prepare all the questions. It is such a good teaching plan for a teacher to teach well without any problems and confusion. In the end of the class also, the teacher has to give assignment to the students and tell them the deadline.
This school is very religious and majority of them are Roman Catholic. So, in every lesson plan, there must be a bible text related to their lesson. That is why the students are very disciplined in managing their time and doing their assignments because they learned a lot about their bible. This school also have their own values which are related to their religion and also daily lesson.

Below is the spiritual legacy of venerable ignacia Del Espiritu Santo. It is about ignacian core values, scripture texts and the life and teachings of Mother Ignacia Del Espiritu Santo:

They have three (3) core values that must be including in teachers' lesson plan:

  1. FAITH - Strong faith in God, Prophetic witness to gospel values, Nationalism, Justice, Communion.
  2. EXCELLENCE - Integrity, Competence, Resourcefulness, Discipline, Self-Reliance.
  3. SERVICE - Stewardship, Humility, Charity, Courage, Preferential love of the poor.
Not forget also about the teaching media. The teachers there also very encouraged in using LCD, and laptop to give the lesson to the students. In preparing their lesson, such as their power point, and lesson plan also really prioritized in using google to search to find everything which related to their lesson. If the students are going to make some practical, they will be given the chance to go to the library and the laboratory to make them easier in understanding the theory about their lesson.
Other than that, they are also very active and that showed us their passion to keep on learning something new. What I missed and loved very much about them are their daily greetings, the way they try to be more closed to me, and also the way they treat me as their mother in class. They will hug, and say "Hi, miss Christie" everyday. That is why I miss them so much! Lets take a look into the pictures.

Observation week

(Class condition when the students prepared and performed their activities- Class Observation)

So from the activities above, you can see that the basic school of UIC recognized as a school that prioritized the value of Excellence. It is to continue in meeting the challenge to maintain and strengthen its academic and non-academic performance and sustain its achievements over the years.
This school has LEADS and SHAPES, it is an innovative and transformative system of instructional delivery. All of the students and faculty are reminded also of these imperativs through a LEADS prayer before the start of a class or activity and the SHAPES prayer at the end of a class or activity. These prayer also help them to imbibe more meaningfully the goal of their school.
Under this program, this school aims to be the premier pre-college education provider in Region
XI under the K to 12 program, forming graduates to be leaders with characters. The teachers have also prepared for the intensified application of the initial implementation of the K to 12 program by undergoing the training, "Curricular Visioning and Benchmarking". It puts emphasis on the teacher as a curriculum leader and it is also an innovative approach to re-tool the faculty to effect curricular change and to expand learning opportunities. They also engage in the workshop activities, leading to a review of the development program on instruction.

Teaching Weeks

(Teaching in the Class)

(Examination)

Suggestions!
In teaching the students, it is like an unsure condition that hard to predict. Sometimes, when I teach them, the purposes of my lessons were successfully achieved, but sometimes not. It was because of the difficulty on explaining and making the students to get what the lesson about. The procedures were very useful whether inside or outside class because it really help me on manage everything. The outcomes of my teaching also positive, even though I faced some problems but still can handle the class very well especially when the students were doing their activities in classroom.
However, where there are advantages, there are also shortages. I faced lots of challenges in teaching them because they are so intelligence, so I have to study more and master the lesson more than them. In making my preparation to teach, it was difficult for me to find the materials because of a slow internet connection, it made me hard to study well.
Lastly, my suggestions for future improvement are about the sources and time to teach in the class. The school have to prepare many books for teachers to teach, and do not give a short time for them to teach because sometimes, the students were not able to do their activities in the classroom because they did not have enough time.

Cultural Differences Unite Us

Different countries, certainly different cultures! I believe all people knew about that, they think that different cultures will caused an inside war, like misunderstanding about any action, talk, thought, and habit of someone. They cannot live a life together, stay in a home together, and in other words mix with each other. And finally will eventually result in a cultural separation. But.......
In UIC, Philippines, rather the culture that unites us, we never assume that different cultures will separate us. There we learned to respect one another, and helped each other. We learned from each other to accept the shortcomings of people, and what I like is, they will never get tired of asking me questions. Everyday, I got the questions of "How are you today? How was your day? Did you sleep well?" and that makes me became more comfortable to be around them.
In our opening ceremony, our dean introduced us about the campus and the school where will be my school to teach. They brought us to go to the basic school to see the condition of the school also to meet with our cooperating teachers. We also went to the Consulate Office to report our arrival as Indonesian citizens there. The next day, we started our class observation and there we met lots of new friends, who were also interns there. We made friends and also introduced ourselves to each other.
